Every year it gives me great pleasure to be part of these awards, which mean so much to the people competing for - and winning - them. But this year’s awards are extra-special after all that we’ve been through.

Each year we celebrate local business success whatever the challenges – and since March last year those challenges have been unprecedented.

Tonight is an opportunity to reflect that the Portsmouth business community has stood strong throughout the pandemic and has dealt with everything that has been thrown at us. It’s been quite an achievement.

Congratulations to everyone here tonight and I look forward to sharing in the joy of our winners, who thoroughly deserve their honours, particularly as the competition has been the toughest yet.

I hope you enjoy your evening

Congratulations to all the finalists in the Business Excellence Awards 2021

As we look back on the past 18 months, the resilience of our local businesses never ceases to amaze me. Whether it is their passion for supporting local community initiatives, their ability to adapt to differing business models, the ease with which they have turned to the internet to help with sales, advertising or the dynamic way team working and meetings have been delivered online; it has been a time in which many not only survived, but thrived. It is only fitting that we as a University, who work with businesses of all sizes and sectors, should be leading on the celebrations of those who are recognised this evening in The News Business Excellence Awards.

The University is proud to be the headline sponsor this year, building upon our engagement with The News as category sponsors in the past. I know how difficult it is to judge awards and understand the time and effort that is put in to submit an entry. Given the opportunity, I would give an award to all for the amazing achievements of the past year! Our colleagues have supported the category judges in this process and I am excited to find out who tonight's winners and highly commended are.

Please enjoy your evening and join me in saying “congratulations to all the finalists”.
